Annual Planning Meeting May 22

Please mark your calendar for Saturday May 22nd at 10am for our Boston Alumnae Association Annual Business Meeting. It will be held at the Panera Bread in Burlington, MA. Enjoy a coffee and delicious treat with your sisters while we discuss this years events as well as put together our schedule for next year. Your input is important, so if you are not able to attend, please feel free to list in your regrets any ideas / suggestions you have for future meetings or email me privately at jillpotts@comcast.net.

If you are able to attend, please bring your 2010 - 2011 calendar (if possible) and lots of ideas! If you have a specific event that you think might work for a gathering, do a bit of research as to dates, locations and prices and bring it along to share.

Winter Philanthropy Gathering

The next meeting of the Alpha Xi Delta Boston Alumnae Association will be on Saturday, March 6 from 10:30 - 12pm at the Westwood Library Community Room, in Westwood, MA. Light refreshments will be served and children are welcome.

This will be a philanthropy meeting and we request that each person bring an item (or more) to be donated to our group's local philanthropy, Christopher's Haven. Suggested items they currently need include:

* alarm clocks with battery back-up option (need 5)

* flashlights (need 8)

* batteries for flashlights

* neutral colored hand towels

* neutral colored face cloths

We will also be discussing other philanthropy opportunities for our group that involve our national philanthropy, Autism Speaks!

Philanthropy Brunch January 26

Please join the Greater Boston Alpha Xi Delta Alumnae Association at our philanthropy meeting on Saturday January 26 at 10 a.m. Enjoy a cup of coffee and yummy breakfast treat with your sisters while supporting Choose Children.

The meeting will be taking place at Panera Bread in Dedham MA, starting at 10 a.m. We will be collecting art supplies for a wonderful organization called Christopher's Haven. This organization has created a home for families coming to Boston for cancer treatment for children.

Some ideas for art supplies include: markers, crayons, paper, paint, paintbrushes, glue/glue sticks, collage materials, stickers, beading supplies, rubber stamps/ink, bingo markers, chalk, colored pencils, pipe cleaners, playdough, etc.

If you have not already signed up, there is still time to join your sisters for the 2007 Alpha Xi Delta Convention in Indianapolis, to be held Wednesday, June 27 through Sunday, July 1 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel.

This year's convention features a 5K race and a silent auction to benefit the Alpha Xi Delta Foundation, tours of the newly renovated Fraternity Headquarters, and the traditional Rose Banquet.

The General Session speaker will be Jen Schefft (Ohio University), sharing her lessons on love and life that she learned through her experience on ABC's The Bachelor and The Bachelorette.

Our Centennial Celebration -- March 8, 1907 - 2007

March 8, 2007 is the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Boston Alumnae Chapter of Alpha Xi Delta. The Boston Alumnae Association is proud of its 100 years of service to the community and the fraternity. It is the second-oldest Alpha Xi Delta Alumnae Association, and was a founding member of the Boston Alumnae Panhellenic Association in 1921.

It came into being at the same time as Lambda chapter at Jackson College (now part of Tufts University) in Medford, Massachusetts. The 20 collegiate members and 25 alumnae of a local sorority (Tau Epsilon Sigma) were installed as members of Alpha Xi Delta; the alumnae became the first members of the Boston Alumnae Chapter (now the Greater Boston Alumnae Association.)

A prominent founding member of the association was Ruth Sibley Haskell. An early history of the fraternity states: "The innate love of people which made her so loved as a fraternity officer [she served nine years on Alpha Xi Delta's National Council] also made her an earnest worker in the cause of woman suffrage and an untiring Red Cross worker during the [first] World War." She and her husband became benefactors of Tufts University; a scholarship and a dormitory at the university bear their name.

On this anniversary we celebrate the many Alpha Xi Delta sisters who have contributed to "The Sisterhood of Women" in the Boston area!

Our Choose Children Philanthropy

Thank you to everyone who attended our fall philanthropy meeting last Saturday. We collected several dozen children's DVDs for Christopher's Haven, a charitable organization that is working to provide housing near Mass General Hospital for families who have a child being treated for cancer. We expect to continue donating resources to this wonderful group.

Please mark your calendar and come to the next Boston Alpha Xi Delta Philanthropy meeting on Sunday October 16th at 1pm. The meeting will be held at Jan H.'s house in Burlington MA. We are supporting Starlight Starbright Children's Foundation. This organization is an international non-profit organization dedicated to brightening the lives of seriously ill and hospitalized children and their families through innovative programs that empower, educate, entertain, and inspire. Our meeting on Sunday the 16th will focus on two things. First, we need your energy to help assemble 10 "parties in a box". These boxes will include games, toys, and art supplies. The Starlight Starbright Children's Foundation will supply all of the items, boxes and shipping labels/costs. The assembly usually takes one person about a half-hour. Second, each party box costs about $100. Our group would like to be able to donate at least $100 to Starlight Starbright Children's Foundation. Please consider supporting this by donating towards this goal. If you are able to attend on the 16th, you can bring your donation then. If you are unable to attend, contact Jan at bostonalphaxi@comcast.net.

On Sunday, December 12 we will be joining Margaret (Peggy) C. to celebrate her 100th birthday in Arlington MA. Margaret became a member of Alpha Xi Delta in 1922 when she was a student at Jackson College (now part of Tufts University.) She worked as an English teacher in Lexington, MA before her marriage, and was active in community and fraternity life as a volunteer for many, many years. Alpha Xi Delta’s National Council proudly announces the installation of Iota Iota Chapter at Greensboro College (North Carolina) on December 4, 2004. Iota Iota chapter will be installed as Alpha Xi Delta’s 201st chapter. Alpha Xi Delta will be the first national organization installed at Greensboro, joining a colony of Theta Xi Fraternity and a number of local fraternities and sororities. We've decided to make Globe Santa the beneficiary of proceeds from our 3rd annual craft/bake sale and holiday party on Sunday, November 14. We'll be meeting at the home of Jean L. in Andover, Massachusetts at 2:30 p.m. for hot cider, desserts, socializing, and a silent auction of homemade crafts and bake items. Please don't be intimidated by the idea of making something for the sale -- we don't need anything fancy (the highest bid in the past was around $15) -- typical items include baked goods, jams, gift tags and holiday cards, candy wreaths, gifts in jars (cookie mixes, etc.), holiday ornaments, embroidered bookmarks, decorated votives, and so on. There are plenty of ideas on the internet. But, if you aren't handy and don't bake, just come along, chat with sisters, and bid on items to raise funds for a Choose Children charity! Congratulations to Devon McGoldrick of Rochester Institute of Technology on her award of this year's Spaulding-Mowry Scholarship for studies in government or environmental affairs. The late Gertrude Spaulding, long-time member of the Alpha Xi Delta Alumnae Association of Greater Boston, provided the funds to the Alpha Xi Delta Foundation to endow this scholarship, with the assistance of her husband Bill and the estate of her sister, Virginia Mowry.
